Are You a Candidate for Total Joint Replacement?
There is no “right” age for joint replacement. In fact, since RWJ Hamilton uses only high-quality and technologically-advanced implants that can last for 25 to 30 years, one of the fastest growing age groups for joint replacement is patients between 45 and 55.
Most candidates are people who are limited in their everyday activities and unable to participate in hobbies and other interests because of pain. In addition, they no longer benefit from conservative treatments such as medication, injections or physical therapy.
Prior to surgery, patients typically report signs and symptoms such as: pain for four or more days per week, pain that makes it difficult to sleep, and pain and discomfort that requires something stronger than over-the-counter medication.
For a majority of people, pain is related to arthritis — which includes osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease that causes cartilage to “wear out,” become irregular and rough. The remaining bones rub against each other and cause pain and stiffness.
If your pain is holding you back from the things you enjoy doing, you may benefit from joint replacement. RWJ Hamilton specializes in total joint replacement for knee, hip, shoulder, ankle and elbow. Our goal is to help you get back to your normal activities, reduce pain and increase mobility and independence.
