Stomach cancer

 
Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

 

  • microscopic internal bleeding
  • fatigue
  • anemia
  • heartburn
  • abdominal pain
  • black stools
  • vomiting blood
  • weakness
  • unintended weight loss
  • full feeling after meals (even when eating less than normal)
 
Causes

Causes may include:

 

  • H. pylori infection
  • stomach ulcers
  • atrophic gastritis - acid-producing glands are slowly destroyed
  • nitrates and nitrites - combine with other nitrogen-containing substances in the stomach and form N-nitroso compounds — carcinogens that are known to cause stomach cancer
  • tobacco and alcohol use - can irritate the stomach lining which increases the risk of stomach cancer
 
Treatments

Treatment may include:

 

  • palliative care - aimed helping to relieve symptoms
  • surgery
  • chemotherapy
  • radiation therapy
  • medication
  • targeted drug therapy
