Gonorrhea is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by exposure to the gonococcus bacterium that is spread through semen or vaginal fluids during unprotected sexual contact with an infected partner.


Symptoms (general) may include:


  • thick, cloudy or bloody discharge from the penis or vagina
  • pain or burning sensation when urinating
  • frequent urination
  • pain during sexual intercourse
    • in men:
      • tingling sensation in the urethra
      • painful urination
      • discharge from the penis
    • in women:
      • frequent, urgent and painful urination
      • abnormal discharge from the vagina or urethra.

Causes may include:


  • the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus)

Treatment may include:


  • medication
