perforated eardrum

A ruptured or perforated eardrum is an opening in the eardrum, also called the tympanic membrane.


Symptoms may include:


  • drainage from the ear
  • ear noise or buzzing
  • earache
  • hearing loss in the affected ear

Causes may include:


  • direct injury
  • trauma from pressure
  • inserting cotton-tipped swabs into the ear
  • foreign objects in the ear
  • ear infections

Treatment may include:


  • medication
