Pleurisy is characterized by the inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the lungs, and separates the lungs from other organs such as the heart and the diaphragm.  This membrane is called a pleura or pleural sac.  When the pleura gets inflammed, the surface of the membrane rub together, causing pain when the person takes a breath in. 


Symptoms may include:


  • sharp, stabbing chest pain
  • shoulder pain
  • coughing
  • fever
  • shortness of breath
  • rapid breathing
  • sore throat

Treatment may include:


  • removing excess fluid
  • medication
  • rest
  • surgery
  • pulmonology
