pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
 

Pneumothorax occurs when the collection of air or gas in the space around the lungs causes enough pressure to collapse the lung. 

 
Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

 

  • sudden sharp chest pain, made worse by a deep breath or a cough
  • shortness of breath
  • chest tightness
  • easy fatigue
  • rapid heart rate
  • bluish color of the skin caused by lack of oxygen
  • drop in blood pressure
  • low blood pressure (hypotension)

Treatment may include:

 

  • air removal via a chest tube
  • observation
