severe acute respiratory syndrome

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral infection that may progress to pneumonia. 


Symptoms may include:


  • nonproductive cough
  • rash
  • high fever
  • diarrhea
  • respiratory distress (later stages)

Causes may include:


  • coronavirus (sarsassociated coronavirus)

Treatment may include:


  • strict respiratory and mucosal barrier precautions
  • quarantine of exposed people to prevent spread
  • diet as tolerated
  • activity as tolerated
  • medications
