Syphilis is a chronic, infectious, sexually transmitted disease where the infecting organism penetrates intact mucous membranes or abrasions in the skin, entering lymphatics and blood.
Symptoms may include:
- primary syphilis
- one or more chancres - small, fluid-filled lesions - on the genitalia, anus, fingers, lips, tongue, nipples, tonsils, or eyelids
- in female patient
- secondary syphilis
Causes may include:
- spirochete treponema pallidum
- blood transfusion (rare)
Treatment may include:
- immediate examination of all sexual contacts
- hospitalization - for symptomatic late syphilis
- no sexual activity until cured
- medications
