Greater Mercer Public Health Partnership Hosts Diabetes Awareness Day
Date: 11/5/2013

The Greater Mercer Public Health Partnership will sponsor its first-ever Diabetes Awareness Day on Wednesday, November 6, to provide free diagnostic screenings and inform residents about the escalating threat posed by diabetes.

Healthcare professionals will be posted at prominent locations during three convenient time-periods throughout the day.

Nationally, the number of people living with diabetes more than doubled in the past 15 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In New Jersey, about 8 percent of all adults—or 1 in 12—have been diagnosed with diabetes. Thousands more remain undiagnosed or at-risk of developing diabetes due to obesity, inactivity, genetics or other factors.

The Greater Mercer Public Health Partnership—a collaboration of hospitals, health departments and not-for-profit organizations—designed Diabetes Awareness Day to educate residents about how to prevent diabetes.

In addition to free blood glucose screenings, participants will be able to learn about diabetes, pre-diabetes, nutrition and exercise. Health professionals will be available from 7 to 9 a.m., 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m. at five locations:

        ·          RWJ Fitness & Wellness Center, 3100 Quakerbridge Road, Mercerville

·          Quaker Bridge Mall, Lawrenceville

·          Capital Health Medical Center—Hopewell, One Capital Way, Pennington

·          St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center, 2381 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville

·          University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, One Plainsboro Road, Plainsboro
