The Cancer Institute of New Jersey Hamilton (CINJ Hamilton)

Pauline Lerma, MD
Medical Director, Breast Consultation Program

I joined the Cancer Institute of New Jersey - Hamilton in 2008 after serving as an Instructor of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the MCP-Hahnemann/Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia where I completed my fellowship.

I have a special interest in breast cancer and presently serve as medical director of our breast cancer program.  I work closely with our radiation oncologists, pathologists, surgeons, nurses and social workers to provide comprehensive care.  We are mindful of the challenges that a diagnosis of breast cancer brings and I believe that our team approach helps ease patients’ anxieties as they sort through the various treatment decisions that have to be made to optimize their health.

At CINJ, I am involved in the diagnosis and management of various types of solid malignancies such as colon cancer, lung cancer, and ovarian cancer.  I also treat hematologic malignancies such as lymphomas, chronic leukemias and multiple myeloma.  I believe in taking the time to educate patients about their disease so they can make informed decisions about treatment options that achieve the best possible outcomes.  While we have a community-based oncology practice at CINJ - Hamilton, our patients do have the opportunity to avail of novel therapeutic regimens or promising pharmacologic agents through the Phase II and Phase III clinical trials that are open at our center.  We also work closely with CINJ in New Brunswick to allow patients from our community access to Phase I trials.

I have recently taken the responsibility of supervising the high-risk clinic at CINJ - Hamilton.  I work closely with our genetics counselors to help individuals with inherited predispositions understand their susceptibility to various types of malignancies and learn how to prevent them.   I believe that the prevention of cancer plays an important role in combating this devastating health problem.
