Emergency Medicine Excllence: Top 5% in the Nation
HealthGrades, the nation's leading, independent source of hospital quality ratings recently announced that RWJ Hamilton earned its Emergency Medicine Excellence Award for a second year in a row. This recognition places RWJ Hamilton among the top five percent of hospitals nationwide (one of 268 recipients out of 5,000 hospitals) and one of only five New Jersey recipients in 2011.
The findings are based on an analysis of Medicare patient records from 2007 to 2009, focusing on 12 of the most common and life-threatening medical emergencies:
- Bowel obstruction
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Diabetic acidosis and coma
- Gastrointestinal bleed
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Pancreatitis
- pneumonia
- Pulmonary embolism
- Respiratory failure
- Sepsis
- Stroke
According to the HealthGrades study, Medicare patients treated at hospitals recognized with an Emergency Medicine Excellence Award had, on average, a 40 percent lower risk of death compared to patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
A significant accomplishment for all who deliver care, this level of excellence is achieved through the contributions of hundreds of RWJ Hamilton employees who impact emergency medicine. From radiology and lab technologists who provide diagnostic testing to registrars and unit secretaries who keep patients and staff efficiently moving through each visit, all team members ensure patients get award-winning medical care in emergency situations.
