RWJ Barnabas Cancer Care is how we link multiple hospitals to hundreds of local cancer specialists. It’s where precision medicine, genomics and clinical trials come together every day to help our patients and put a cure within reach through a partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Exemplary care and service paired with access to advanced technologies and the latest protocols available is how we’re bringing high-quality cancer care close to home.

A Cancer Partnership with Expert Physicians
Medical oncology physicians at the cancer center are from Regional Cancer Care Associates (RCCA), a leading oncology group and the largest on the east coast. They partner with sub-specialists from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey as well as local physicians and surgeons to provide the local community with top-rated physicians, nationally recognized cancer care in a convenient local setting. Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey is a center of excellence of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and is the state’s only Comprehensive Cancer Center designated by the National Cancer Institute. Rutgers physician-scientists engage in translational research, transforming their laboratory discoveries into clinical practice, quite literally bringing research to life. The team of dedicated physicians provides individualized care utilizing their extraordinary knowledge and expertise to treat cancer right in their own communities.

The mission of the partnership is to offer New Jersey's residents better access to cancer-related information and treatment close to where they live. The goal in creating the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey Hamilton was to provide patients with an alternative to traveling long distances for frequent appointments for physician visits, treatment and support.

Through our relationship with the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, we are working to:

  • Contribute to the development of new treatments and hasten their availability to patients within our communities
  • Understand the factors that influence cancer outcomes in our patient population
  • Improve the quality of cancer care received
  • Improve the quality of life of our patients and their loved ones
  • Overcome cancer health disparities due to race, geography, educational or socioeconomic status

A Higher Standard of Care
As one of only 45 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation, Rutgers Cancer Institute is held to the nation’s toughest standards. Patients receiving care by Rutgers physicians and RWJ  Barnabas Health have options only available through NCI-designated cancer center institutions:

  • Timely cancer screening and treatment at an institution that must uphold the highest standards of the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer criteria for Cancer Programs (detailed on-site reviews are conducted regularly to maintain national accreditation).
  • Access to the latest cancer prevention, early detection and treatment options through the Rutgers clinical research program.
  • Cancer care directed at healthy survivorship. Together, Rutgers and RWJ Hamilton are working on a variety of topics facing survivors, ranging from diet to sexuality. We are also studying ways of treating cancer with the least side effects so that all cancer survivors are healthy and have a good quality of life.

Convenience and Comfort
Our cancer center was designed so that the local community could experience the convenience and comfort of seeking care locally. We know living with cancer is a serious challenge and there are many physician, treatment and lab appointments. When patients receive the same treatment as cancer centers in distant metropolitan hospitals, they are better served with the added benefits of convenience:

  • Family and friends can lend support, as local cancer care ensures they can drive a loved one to or from treatment, ask questions and record notes during a physician appointment, and still make it to work if needed.
  • Drive-up parking, or coordination of medical transportation if needed, is convenient when patients are not feeling well.
  • Proximity to support groups or social work appointments provide patients with emotional and psychosocial support.

A cancer center built outside the walls of the hospital provides a healing environment. Each patient infusion bay looks to the outdoors, featuring calming floor-to-ceiling views of plants, birds and sculpture in the landscaped Grounds For Healing®.
