Your Accommodations

Your Room
Your room assignment at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton is based upon your admitting diagnosis and the bed availability on the day of your admission. Private and semi-private rooms are available. Medical insurance usually does not cover the full cost of a private room.

Patient Room
Room Temperature

The temperature in your room may be adjusted by using the controls on the window unit (or wall thermostat in Maternity). If your heating and cooling units are not working properly, please contact ext. 6900, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. At all other times, please dial "0" and ask the Operator to page *027 for Maintenance on call.

Calling Your Nurse
A button to call your nurse is located at your bedside. When you press the button, the nursing station is alerted that you need assistance, and a light flashes on above your door. A staff member will respond to your signal as soon as possible.

Telephone
Bedside telephone service is available to patients free of charge during your stay. You are entitled to an unlimited number of local calls during your stay. Long distance calls may be billed to a telephone credit card or your home telephone. Incoming calls may be received between 7 a.m.-10 p.m. For your comfort, incoming calls are not permitted after 10 p.m.

To place a call, dial 9, wait for dial tone and then dial the number. 800 numbers may be dialed the same way. Long distance calls may be placed by dialing 80, the area code and the number you are trying to reach. A telephone operator will connect the call. Public pay phones are also available throughout the hospital.

The hospital also provides various services such as; TTY telephone assistance - a text messaging device for the hearing impaired; Sign language - for anyone that would prefer assistance in communicating their wants and needs; and language interpretation - offering multi-lingual translations, both written and verbal. If you need to use any of these services during your stay, please notify your nurse.

Television
All patient rooms are provided with remote controlled cable television sets. This, too, is a free service provided to all of our patients. Please be considerate of your roommate when watching television.

Your Hospital Bed/Wheelchairs
Hospital beds are electrically operated, and your nurse will show you how to work your bed properly. Your hospital bed is probably higher and narrower than your bed at home.

Bedside rails are for your protection. If the siderails on your bed have been placed in an upright position, do not attempt to lower them yourself, or climb over them. Please call your nurse for assistance. Also, please do not try to get in or out of a wheelchair by yourself.

During the Night

Please stay in bed during the night. Strange surroundings and sleeping medications may create a hazard if you attempt to get out of bed on your own. For assistance, use your call button.

Cellular Phones

Cellular phones are not permitted within the Emergency Department, the ICU or the CCU units of the hospital.

Housekeeping
If the cleanliness of your room does not meet your expectations, please call ext. 6489, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., for immediate attention. At all other times, please dial "0" and ask the Operator to page Housekeeping on call.
