The Diabetes Screening and Support Program for Children and Teenagers in Mercer County

An innovative program coordinated by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton and made possible with grant funding compliments of Bristol-Myers Squibb.

In response to an alarming increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes among children and teenagers, the Diabetes Screening and Support Program for Children and Teenagers in Mercer County was developed to educate school personnel, parents and health care professionals and to screen and support Mercer County youth and their families. The program’s objective is to assist and empower school nurses to identify students at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and initiate family education and early referral/access to appropriate health care services. The ultimate goal is the prevention of type 2 diabetes in youth whenever possible.

This screening and education program is coordinated through the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at RWJ Hamilton, which has achieved national recognition through the American Diabetes Association. Each public, parochial and charter school in Mercer County is invited to participate. The program is implemented with district approval, and careful consideration is given to each participating school's needs.

For more information about the program or how to get involved, please contact the program coordinator at (609) 584-2893.
