Maternity & Childbirth

What To Expect:

Before You Deliver

Planning and preparation are two of your strongest allies when it comes to childbirth. There are so many surprises on the way, it is best to make some important decisions and arrangements prior to giving birth. To prepare for the birth of your baby, it is important you take care of the following details:

Select a Pediatrician
>It is important that you select a pediatrician to care for your newborn in advance of giving birth. For a list of available pediatricians, click here.

Take a Class
A wide range of childbirth education classes are available at the RWJ Hamilton Center for Health & Wellness. Call 609.584.5900 or visit Community Education Calendar - Register for Classes for more information.

Make Decisions
Consider how you would like to handle the ABCs - anethesia, breastfeeding and circumcision- so that we can provide quality care during this special time.

Take a Tour
Come see us! To schedule a private maternity unit tour, call HealthConnection at 609.584.5900.

Obtain an Infant Car Seat
It is required by law to have an appropriate infant car seat for your baby to travel home. Please make appropriate transportation arrangements well before your baby's due date. Police stations often offer classes and education on car seat choice and installation. We recommend contacting your local police to learn more.

Admission Process

Once labor and contractions have begun, you must notify your obstetrician or midwife. If the situation is an emergency, contact your obstetrician and go directly to the Women & Infants Pavilion, located on the north side of the hospital at the Klockner Road entrance, behind the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Hamilton.

Upon arrival, all registration and admission procedures will be taken care of in the Maternal Child Health Services Unit. Please be sure to bring your health insurance information and driver's license. The nursing staff will contact your pediatrician once your new baby has arrived.

Pain Management (Anesthesiology)

Before your big day arrives, you'll want to discuss pain management options with your obstetrician or midwife. Be sure the nursing staff on the unit is fully aware of your requests so that they may provide the best possible care to you and your baby.

The maternal child health services department at RWJ Hamilton offers 24-hour anesthesia coverage for laboring patients. By attending a childbirth education class, offered through the RWJ Hamilton community education department, you can learn about pain management options before you give birth. For more information about these classes, call 609.584.5900.
