What is a Vascular Lab?
A Vascular Lab is designed for the examination of vessels (arteries and veins) using ultrasound equipment. Ultrasound utilizes sound waves and a computer to visualize the arteries and veins in different parts of the body.
The procedure is safe and painless.
What are common vascular studies that are performed?

- Carotid studies look at vessels supplying blood to the
brain.
- Upper extremity arterial study looks at the blood flow
and for any narrowing vessels in the arms.
- Lower extremity arterial study looks for any peripheral
vascular disease which narrows the vessels in the legs.
- Upper and lower extremity venous studies look for blood clots or any problems
with the veins.
Preparation
Vascular ultrasound studies do not require any special preparation.
Comfortable, loose clothes are suitable for the exam. As the test takes anywhere between 1 to 1 ½ hours,
it is advisable to empty the bladder before the test.
During the Exam
The study is performed by a trained vascular technologist. Before
your actual exam, the vascular technologist will explain
the procedure to you and answer any questions you might
have. You will be asked to lie on a padded table. Liquid
gel will be applied to the skin over the area that is to
be scanned. A transducer or probe will be slowly moved over
the body part to be imaged. The time required for the exam
is between 1 to 1 ½ hrs.
After the Exam
The test results will be interpreted by the Radiologist/Vascular
surgeon and a copy of the report will be sent to the patient's
physician. The films or results are kept in the patient's
file or our department's file room. You will be able to
resume all your normal activities and diet immediately after
the exam. Your physician will advise you of the results
and discuss your treatment plan.
