The Beatles in India: Pictures and Stories
Beatles Photographer and Author Paul Saltzman to Speak at RWJ Hamilton Center for Health & Wellness, Thursday March 15
2/23/2007
HAMILTON, NEW JERSEY – Author, photographer and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Paul Saltzman, will share his pictures and stories of an extraordinary experience with The Beatles on Thursday, March 15, 7 p.m. at the RWJ Hamilton Center for Health & Wellness, 3100 Quakerbridge Road, Mercerville, New Jersey. Tickets are $5.
Saltzman, as a 24-year old, ventured in 1968 to the spiritual retreat center of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh, India. Little did he know that other guests during his stay would include four guys named John, Paul, George and Ringo. Saltzman will speak about conversations he had with all four Beatles and the memories from his encounter with "four very human, ordinary guys."
Saltzman photographed the Beatles in Rishikesh, as well as other guests at the retreat including Mike Love of the Beach Boys, actress Mia Farrow and folk-rock legend Donovan. Upon returning to his home in Canada, Saltzman placed his work in a box and forgot about it for nearly 30 years. Once his 18-year old daughter fell in love with music of the Beatles, she asked whether she could see her father's photos. After a three-week search of his attic, his lost work was found.
"Paul Saltzman's photos of all of us in India, in 1968, are absolutely beautiful," says Cynthia Lennon, the former wife of John Lennon, on Satlzman's Web site. "(His) photo of John…is the best picture I've ever seen of John Lennon from the Beatles' era—it speaks volumes."
Fans and historians of The Beatles have embraced Saltzman's extraordinary photographs. The photos provide significant detail to a relatively little-recorded episode in the career of the world's most famous band. His photos and limited edition books will be available for purchase during the March 15 event.
