Education, Friendly Introduction to Health and Medicine
9/25/2007
HAMILTON, NEW JERSEY - Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton recently opened its doors to area children and parents for its sixth annual Children's Hospital Tour. The tour included representatives from hospital departments as well as sheriff deputies and an emergency medical technician who explained what to expect when visiting a hospital as a guest or patient.

"Our children's hospital tour is a safe way to introduce a child to a hospital setting," says Nurse Educator Kathie Werkman, LPN, who helped organize the event for RWJ Hamilton's Community Education department. "The tour includes up-close access to medical equipment alongside professionals who can explain its capability in a way that a child can understand. In the event that these children come to the hospital as guests or patients, this introduction will ease their fears."
The Children's Hospital Tour included nurses, dietitians and technicians from the hospital's cardiovascular, community education, maternity and radiology departments, as well as medical professionals from infection control and the operating room. Deputies of the Mercer County Sheriff's Department were on hand to speak about safety and a RWJ Hamilton emergency medical technician toured the children inside an ambulance.
Children were provided opportunities to identify bones and organs, examine x-rays, have a leg bandaged or splinted, and observe how newborn babies are treated. Nutrition tips, information on the cardiovascular system, and demonstrations on proper hygiene were also provided.
