This test is used to check the quantity and quality of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
- Red blood cell count – used to determine if the level of red cells in the blood is too high or too low. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the tissues.
- Hematocrit – used to look for too high or too low levels of red blood cells
- White blood cell count – used to determine if the level of white blood cells is too high or too low. White blood cells fight infection.
- Differential blood count – measures the amount of 5 different blood cells.
- Hemoglobin – measures the amount of hemoglobin and if the levels of red blood cells are normal. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying pigment that gives blood its red color.
- Platelet count – measures the amount of platelets in the blood. Platelets are cell fragments that enable blood to clot.
