Gastric Banding Surgery is a weight loss procedure that reduces a patient’s appetite, limits how much a person can eat, and slows digestion through an adjustable band restricting the size of the stomach. The surgery is beneficial to people unable to control their weight through healthy diet and exercise, and who have a body mass index—BMI—greater than 40; about 100 pounds overweight for men and 80 pounds overweight for women. Some surgeons perform a less invasive technique known as Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding.
