Working Moms Find Support at RWJ Hamilton
Hospital expands support programs for new mothers returning to work
Date: 1/28/2014

Working mother of two, Nicole Kekesi can relate to the emotions new mothers feel when they return to work. Twelve weeks after giving birth to her son she was back to her job.

“I sat in the car, in the parking lot of the hospital, and cried,” says Nicole of her first day back to work. “I felt like I was missing out. I felt guilty letting someone else raise my baby.”

Nicole isn’t alone. More than half of all new moms go back to work when their infants are younger than one year old – many with conflicted emotions.

As a certified lactation consultant for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton (RWJ Hamilton), Nicole facilitates several of the hospital’s daytime support groups for mothers-to-be and new mothers, and found a growing need for evening programs that cater to women returning to work.

“We started to see that our daytime support group moms had a new set of questions and concerns around balancing parenthood and a career,” she says. “My colleague and I decided to start an evening support group to accommodate their new schedules.”

Eight mothers, and infants, attended the inaugural meeting of RWJ Hamilton’s Working Mom Support Group on January 16. The group provided an opportunity to learn strategies for breastfeeding success while balancing the demands of pumping, motherhood and working.

“We realize the importance of supporting their needs from conception and prenatal care through childbirth and parenting,” says Stacey Poole, a certified obstetric nurse and childbirth educator for RWJ Hamilton. “Parents are busy and we have to structure classes to accommodate different schedules. We are excited to be able to fulfill some of those needs with this new group.”

The Working Mom Support Group will meet again on Thursday, January 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the RWJ Fitness & Wellness Center, 3100 Quakerbridge Rd, Hamilton, NJ. Infants are welcome. For more information, call 609.584.5900 or go to
