Maternity & Childbirth: Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit

Every family looks forward to the birth of a healthy infant. However, occasionally some babies need extra care and are placed in our certified Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit. Babies born at 32 weeks or later who require special care are observed around the clock and a neonatologist is on site at all times. The nursery is open 24 hours a day, and parents and grandparents are encouraged to visit.
Alicia and John's early arrivals received TLC in the Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit. Read their story here.

The Nursery

The Level II Special Care Nursery is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including monitors, ventilators, and intravenous infusion pumps. Our nursery offers an intimate environment where light, temperature and noise are controlled in order to stimulate the babies to grow – using the minimum amount of energy.

The Staff

Our board certified team of attending physicians, called neonatologists, is responsible for the primary care of each baby that enters the Special Care Nursery. Neonatologists are pediatric physicians with specialized training in the care of sick and premature babies. They are onsite 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Additionally, our staff consists of several highly skilled, certified neonatal nurses who provide individualized care to the infants and comfort and reassurance to parents and families.

Both our team of neonatologists and neonatal nurses have experience in treating babies whose birth weight is as low as three pounds, thus requiring the highest level of medical technology and nursing services available.

Our Philosophy
The goal of every staff member of the maternal child health services department at RWJ Hamilton is to provide the highest level of care using a family-centered approach. We know that having a baby in the special care nursery can be a scary and overwhelming experience.

Our staff does their best to ease the transition and keep families informed of their baby's progress, involving parents every step of the way. It is the caring approach to teaching parents about their newborns’ specialized needs that sets our special care nursery apart from the rest. Parents are encouraged to visit their babies in the special care nursery as often as possible.

By choosing the maternal child health serviced department at RWJ Hamilton for your delivery, not only have you chosen the best in neonatal health, but also peace of mind that your family’s health is first priority. To schedule a maternal child health services tour, call 609.584.5900.
